The Lonely Donkey:
Immersed from time spent living amongst the people of the IDP camps, locals and orphanages within Kenya. Already involved in raising funds for various projects within Kenya ‘The LonelyDonkey’ aims to bring simple infrastructure to those with big needs. The thought came about whilst driving through the small town of ‘Gnong’ 10km north of Nairobi. A donkey was walking aimlessly against the oncoming pedestrians, he looked very lonely yet It was a feeling that encapsulated the distance between what is possible and what it accepted in Africa.
Hi my name is Lauro Martire
Annie Copley Was the Inspiration for what became The lonely donkey. In 2007 Annie approached myself to see if I was interested in using my business at the time to raise money for various projects within Kenya. The projects included education amongst various orphanages, porridge projects for babies/kids and small infrastructure builds including community kitchens, school classrooms and houses.
During 2007/08 Kenya when through unfortunate times of political unrest and due to such radical changes in such short time frames our mission for Caring For The Children Of Africa had to take on specific projects. Our focus moving forward became housing, targeting specific IDP camps. We still allocated a proportion of funds to the porridge projects but it became clear that so many had been driven out of their homes.
Annie Copley and myself met through my cafe in Adelaide, South Australia, it wasn't surprising that we struck up an important relationship instantly, sharing common view on world health issues. Annie wears her heart on her sleeve not thinking twice to question inequality and unfairness. Annie is direct and in such those that surrounded Annie knew any support given would be passed directly to the recipient and trust was the upmost of importance.
